About the Daughters of Penelope

Founded in San Francisco in 1929, the Daughters of Penelope (DOP) is the first women’s organization of its kind established in the United States.  The DOP is an international women’s organization leading in philanthropic, educational, and civic activities through community service and volunteerism. With chapters in the United States, Canada, Australia, Greece, England, France, Germany and Belgium, which are organized into districts. Our mission and outreach are constantly growing.  Our National Headquarters is located in Washington, D.C.

Our Mission is to Promoting Hellenism, Education, Philanthropy, Civic Responsibility, Family and Individual Excellence.

We are the Daughters of Penelope District 5

The first chapter of the Daughters of Penelope of District 5 was chartered in 1936 in Jersey City, NJ.  Icarius #48 was the only chapter for eleven years. In 1947 efforts to charter new chapters came to fruition, with the addition of two chapters and by 1948, there was a total of five chapters.  The District was formally organized in 1948 with the election of the first District Lodge. Currently, there are eleven active chapters in our District throughout the States of New Jersey and Delaware.  To learn more about the Daughters of Penelope click on the link below.

Throughout the years, DOP District 5 has supported many local and national Battered Women’s and Children's Shelters, Food Banks, Soup Kitchens, Children's Specialized Hospital, Arthritis Foundation, The Modern Greek Studies Program at Rutgers University-Elytis Chair, Alzheimer's Foundation, Cystic Fibrosis, Boys and Girls Club of America, Children’s Tumor Foundation, Pompe Foundation, Got Your Back, Wounded Warriors, BringChange2Mind, Covenant House, Family Reach Foundation, Service Dogs for Warriors, Limbitless Solutions and many more…

 

Fifth District AHEPA Cancer Research Foundation

A Project of the District 5 Order of AHEPA and the Daughters of Penelope, the mission of the Foundation is to facilitate fundraising and to award grants to scientists and medical research institutions whose primary goal is to find a cure for cancer. Over the past 30 years the Foundation has awarded $1,125,000 in research grants.

District 5 Biennial Salute to Women

The Fifth District Salute to Women Award is given biannually to a woman who resides within the Fifth District Daughters of Penelope domain, who is of Greek descent or a Phil-Hellene and who has achieved a high level within her profession, who, because of her professional stature serves as a prominent role mode ad inspiration to all young and mature, women and men. Congratulations to all who were nominated and all who have earned this distinguished recognition.
